And Yes. It's normal in most social circles to get together for tea and chat. It's typically a pleasant afternoon in my experience and usually simply means that he enjoys your company platonically.

I would think this poor soul would state that it's a date if that were the case. And if he ever does, I have to wonder about his sanity.

Speaking as someone that likes to retreat from the world, being oblivious is a nice way to get away from the suffering. Especially when it becomes too much. Besides, everyone deserves some form of happiness even if you would rather they suffer.
